Coldest ever Deer Season

Tuesday 26 November 2024

No one came up for bear season, so we have kind of a free day 😏.  Nice, cooked breakfast sorted our hunting clothes to make sure we have everything we need and organized for Saturday morning. Spent the rest of the day getting ready for Thanksgiving. Diane did laundry cleaned up the Moho. I took Diane's rifle back to cabin after outfitting it with a new strap. Then it was time to shower and pack clothes for our Thanksgiving and journey south. Already to go when we get a text that Rick has covid. All our plans went down the drain. πŸ˜”

Just so you know what the tent is that I refer to.

Wednesday 27 November 2024

It appears we now have some more free time. Didn't want to chance getting covid and spreading it around the family, so we are staying put. Diane made us reservation at the Pine Creek Inn for our Thanksgiving dinner.  Then walked through town just to get some exercise stopped in at the sporting good's store we now know the entire inventory. she did up pick a name of under privileged boy in need of Christmas gifts.  She got back to the Moho and decided to go to NY shopping ending up making a day of it. Donated the Thanksgiving food we no longer needed, picked out some items for donated gift, hit Target, Kohl's and wine store.
Looks like the weather is heading south so I cleaned up the Moho, filled fresh water and dumped black and gray water.
And just as you think you're having a great day!! The bank texted at 3:45pm to tell us they needed paperwork and some signatures taken care of today!!πŸ˜• Really!! almost 4pm the day before Thanksgiving. So, Diane spent the next hour or so coping, scanning, loading into email and transmitting data. Wine and leftovers for dinner

Thursday 28 November 2024   HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Snowy Thanksgiving!!

Woke up to a beautiful fresh snowfall.  About 3 inches or so but very pretty.  Town was quiet and almost Norman Rockwell like, stores and restaurants all closed very little traffic. Diane of course went for a walk and found Dollar General, Tops grocery and sporting goods stores open.  I cleaned the snow off the vehicles, cleaned up and we were ready for Thanksgiving dinner. We headed over on the main roads not sure what condition they were in. They weren't bad at all. We walked into The Pine Creek Inn looked around there were only two other tables of people.  But we sat down and slowly the place filled up.  It was a buffet with Turkey, Ham and broiled Haddock with all the fixin's. We agreed we would NOT overeat.  An hour and half after sharing two deserts we quit (it doesn't feel as bad when you split them). We took the back way home.  Mostly dirt roads and very pretty with the fresh snow.
We returned to the Moho waddled in, took some tums.  After taking Rudy for nice long walk, we felt a little better but still stuffed. Nothing for dinner.
   It was a great day.

Friday 29 November 2024

Last day before deer season and we should hear about the house appraisal today (more about that later). I got 5 gal of fuel oil went to the cabin dumped that in the tank, started the furnace and picked up our rifles. Figured we could use a warm cabin while hanging deer. πŸ˜‰ Back to the Moho picked up Diane and off to the famous Golden Aged Cheese Factory in Woodhull NY.  We expected to spend some time shopping there but boy were we disappointed.  The place was tiny. We were in and out in under 10 minutes.
Back to the Moho, Diane headed to Patterson's Maple Shop while I topped off freshwater tank and drain the hose.  Temperatures not to get above freezing for 10 days.πŸ˜’ Made sandwiches organized hunting clothes for the morning.

Saturday 30 November 2024    1st Day of Deer

Up at 3:30 am.  Figures for once the weatherman was right, 19 degrees.  Dressed packed and out the door @ 5:15. Everything was going to planned, I left right away Diane with a much shorter walk waited a bit.  We both arrived at our stands at 6:30.
Diane radioed me said she could hear deer walking all around her but to dark yet to see.  Fifteen minutes later just as you could see, guess what? Just as she trying to focus on a deer, all heck broke loose.  Two different groups of turkeys came off the roost and landed amongst the deer. Then a fight broke out between them.  Deer snorting and stomping at the turkeys, the turkeys flapping their wings and yelling (turkey noises) at the deer.  I could hear the turkeys clear at the top of the hill. After 15 minutes of commotion the deer ran off and turkeys walked up the hill.
In my 50 plus years (who counting) I have never experienced anything like that. WOW When the smoke all cleared it was my turn for fun.  A buck walked up, I aimed very carefully and slowly pulled the trigger. BANG and down fell a sapling just in front of the deer.  and he ran off! πŸ˜– And that was about it for the first day.
Back to the Moho, crock pot meal for dinner and get ready for day two tomorrow. No news about the appraisal but it is Saturday.

You can still shoot a bear, didn't see any but we did find tracks in the snow.

Sunday 1 December 2024

Another day for the weatherman, it was colder than yesterday 17 degrees with a breeze.  Diane wimped out and stayed in bed. Not me!  But Rudy was ever so happy. I made it up the hill to my stand (tent) at 6:45. I have a propane heater (little buddy) uses the 1lb tanks. And by 7:30 I was freezing❄❅ even with the heater on. By 8:30 my feet were so cold I took my boots off and propped my foot right on the heater. This helped but I didn't see anything while taking boots off and on all morning. 10:30 I was on my way in.
Enjoyed lunch with lots of hot coffee. We both went out for the afternoon/evening. I went back up to the top of the hill. Dianes leg was sore so she went to the tent just across the creek. I moved my tent up the hill some more took until 3:30 until I was all settled in. About 4:15 as I gathered up to head in, I heard Diane shoot, then another shot. She radios it was a buck; I hustled down the hill as fast as my old legs would take me.  It was getting dark fast. I hurried over to where see last saw him, no blood or hairπŸ˜ŸπŸ˜•. A clean miss. She says "it was the tents fault" she couldn't stand and sitting there was nothing to rest the rifle on. All down but not out we went back to the Moho.  Dinner and wine to sooth our hearts.

The weather men could have gotten this wrong, but no such luck!!

Monday 2 December 2024

A bit warmer, 22 this morning going up 27 this afternoon. 😫 A little later getting up this morning, we slept in until 4:30. I dropped Diane off at the cabin she sat out back in a lawn chair. Down to Norman's hill and up to the stand. I stayed warmer today and sat very still. Nothing not even the squirrels were out. Picked up Diane and in for lunch.  She stayed in and good thing too. Once again, she was sending copies and answering question from the underwriters, bank and settlement people. They are looking at the 16th of December to close. She asked about the appraisal only to find out it won't be done until THIS Friday. πŸ˜’ I thought this would go much smoother. πŸ˜–
I went back out to her tent. Nothing until just before dark when 4 came by 3 doe and 1 unknown.  I tried and tried but darkness fell faster than the deer moved. I had to give up. πŸ˜–πŸ˜•And head in.

Tuesday 3 December 2024

We both stayed in today. Actually, the warmest day so far 28 this morning.  Diane has a doctor apt. this afternoon.  And was just tired of getting up at 4am and not getting anything.  We (Diane) cooked breakfast, did dishes then headed to the laundromat, and generally cleaned up the place.  One more call from the insurance company for settlement.  Seems all parties are moving right along without the appraisal being done. At least no one is telling us anything.
Rudy is glad we're home!

The temperature is up to 31 degrees, so it is time to dump and fill tanks. Oh yea! Temperature reached 33 for a brief time it felt so good. looking at the weather our days of hunting are limited. high wind warnings for Thursday and Friday like 20-30 mph with gust over 40. Should be interesting to say the least.
Stromboli for dinner

Summary of this post:
The weather, cold and rainy up until Thanksgiving then got really cold and snowy.  Cloudy most all day, every day. We have had snow/snow showers every day since Thanksgiving. And still snowing today.
The mortgage process, everything would go smoothly they said. Nothing did. Appraisal was/should have/maybe be done but is still not. Eating at our gut/nerves every day.  Feeling of excitement soon to have a new house to feelings of despair this will never end.
Hunting, Hunting in the snow is the best!!πŸ˜€ Getting something is better! Hopefully it will end up with deer on the meat pole.
